A Personal Journey

After months of quiet work, heartfelt prayers, and deep reflection, I’m so thankful to finally share something close to my heart: my very first devotional book, Whisper of Faith: 90 Devotions for Life’s Journey , is now out.

This book has been in the making for around eight months. It wasn’t a rushed project; it was a soul-searching journey. Writing Whisper of Faith became more than just putting words on a page. It was a deeply personal process that brought me, I feel, closer to God and His Word. The process also involved a lot of prayer for the Holy Spirit’s guidance. And of course, the book is shaped by the lessons I’ve learned through life’s ups and downs.

As I worked on the book, I was reminded of something simple yet profound: when we reflect on God’s Word, we are changed. Writing this book challenged me to slow down and truly think about the Bible, about God’s promises, and about how He lovingly walks with us through every season of life.

There were moments of doubt and delay, but through it all, I felt God’s grace and the support of my wonderful family. Their encouragement gave me the strength to keep going, even when it felt overwhelming.

My hope is that Whisper of Faith will speak to your heart, especially if you’ve been feeling weary, searching for clarity, or longing for comfort. These devotions are for anyone who needs a gentle reminder that God sees you, He hears you, and He is working in your life, even in the waiting.

Of course, nothing can ever replace the living power of the Bible and the intimate connection we find through prayer. My book is not meant to replace those, but to point you toward them, to help you pause, reflect, and draw closer to God.

Thank you for walking with me on this journey. I pray that Whisper of Faith becomes a quiet companion in your daily walk with the Lord.

Why Our Family Doesn’t Celebrate Pagan Christmas

In our family, we've taken a different approach to Christmas, one that may seem unconventional to many. I want to share with you why we don't celebrate what is commonly known as "pagan Christmas" and how this decision shapes our family traditions.

The Significance of Traditions

We all grow up with certain traditions, especially those ingrained in us since childhood. However, it's essential to question and understand the origins and meanings of these traditions. This is what led our family to rethink how we celebrate Christmas.

The Birth of Christ: A Different Date

Contrary to popular belief, Christ wasn’t born on December 25th. A closer look at the Bible, specifically Revelation 12:1-2 (KJV), hints at a different date. It reads:

"And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered."

This description aligns with astronomical phenomena that occurred around September 11th in the year 3 BC, as verified by astronomical software. Of course, I don’t know if this is an absolute fact, but it is very interesting and something to think about.

The Pagan Roots of Christmas

Christmas, as it is commonly celebrated today, can trace its origins back to a variety of pagan traditions. One of these is the Roman Saturnalia, a festival that honored Saturn, the god of agriculture. This festival was characterized by joyous merrymaking and the exchange of gifts.

Another influence comes from the Winter Solstice celebrations of ancient Babylonia, which were conducted to commemorate the year's shortest day, a period often associated with numerous superstitions and rituals.

Additionally, the traditions of the Druids, known for their enigmatic rituals and deep respect for nature, have significantly shaped the customs we now associate with modern Christmas.

These pagan traditions were later adopted by the Roman Catholic Church as a means to make Christianity more appealing to pagans.

Biblical Teachings on Traditions

The Bible, particularly in the Old Testament, warns against following man-made traditions. Jeremiah 10:1-5 (KJV) cautions us:

"Learn not the way of the heathen... For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest... They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.”

It is important to heed what God says to us in His Word.

Our Family’s Christmas

So, how do we spend Christmas? It's simple. We enjoy our favorite foods and focus on the story of Christ's birth. We often watch an animation or movie about it, which helps our daughter understand the story better, and gives us a chance to discuss it with her.

We believe in honesty with our child. So, we don't perpetuate myths like Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, or the Easter Bunny. Instead, we explain these figures as fictional.

Our home doesn't have a Christmas tree, we don't sing Christmas carols, and we don't exchange gifts. We do, however, appreciate the post-Christmas sales!

A Personal Reflection, Not a Directive

I'm not here to dictate how you should celebrate. But I do encourage you to think about the impact of these traditions, especially if you have children.

As parents, our job is to teach and protect our children, helping them understand God's will. It's about making informed choices that align with our faith and values.

Embracing Autumn Reflections

A Christian Perspective

Autumn, with its vibrant hues and crisp scents, ushers in a season of profound change. Just as the trees shed their leaves, preparing for the onset of winter, we too can use this time as an invitation to introspection, turning inwards to the depths of our souls.

The gentle rustle of leaves beneath our feet and the aroma of damp earth serve as constant reminders of God's ever-changing creation. Each leaf, in its transformation from verdant green to fiery red or golden yellow, showcases the beauty of transition. Likewise, in our lives, seasons of change, while sometimes challenging, have the potential to bring forth beauty and growth.

This unique ambiance of autumn provides the perfect backdrop for reflection and prayer. As the days grow shorter and nights grow colder, we're naturally drawn to the warmth of our homes, both physically and spiritually. In the quiet moments that the fall season offers, we can seek a closer communion with God. Just as Jesus often retreated to solitary places to pray, autumn presents us with an opportunity to slow down, to find our solitary place, whether it's a quiet room or a peaceful woodland trail.

Let the colors that dance on the trees guide your meditations. Reflect upon the blessings and trials of the year gone by, and lay them at God's feet in prayer. As the leaves fall, releasing the past, we too can release our burdens, trusting in His divine plan.

In this season of transition, let us embrace the profound stillness and beauty that autumn brings. In its silent wisdom, it reminds us of the importance of pausing, reflecting, and drawing nearer to our Creator. As the world around us transforms, may our hearts be open to the lessons and blessings that God has in store for us.

Everyday Struggles and the Power of Faith

Every day, as we step out into the world, we are greeted by a myriad of experiences and challenges, some rewarding, some perplexing, and others downright difficult. Our struggles may range from simple inconveniences to life-altering hurdles. As Christians, however, we are reminded that these struggles, no matter how daunting, are not insurmountable.

"I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." (Philippians 4:13, KJV)

Indeed, it's through these struggles that we're shaped and refined, our faith tested and our spirits strengthened. Drawing from my own life, I can confidently affirm that struggles have a unique way of bringing us closer to God. It's during those times that I've experienced God's grace, love, and power in remarkable ways.

The Role of Prayer

Prayer is our direct line to God, a tool that connects us to Him, a practice that avails much when times get hard. As Christians, we're encouraged to maintain an unceasing dialogue with God, communicating our thoughts, fears, dreams, and of course, our struggles.

"Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God." (Philippians 4:6, KJV)

There's a peculiar peace that floods over us when we surrender our worries to God through prayer. It's a peace that transcends understanding, that stills the storm within, enabling us to face the struggles with renewed strength and resolve.

Faith in God

Faith is our firm foundation, our trust in God's character and promises. Faith fuels our journey through the struggles, giving us hope that brighter days are indeed on the horizon.

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." (Hebrews 11:1, KJV)

Having faith in God doesn't mean we'll have a struggle-free existence. In fact, quite the opposite. Yet, what faith assures us is that we are not alone in our struggles, that there's a God who sees, cares, and intervenes on our behalf.

Remembering God’s Love

Our struggles can sometimes cloud our perception of God's love. We may question if He truly cares. It's during these times that we need to pause and remember the unfathomable depths of God's love for us.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16, KJV)

This is the love that paid the ultimate price, that chose us before we chose Him. It's a love that doesn't waver or diminish because of our struggles. If anything, it only becomes more palpable in the midst of them.

Trusting God’s Plan

Every struggle has a purpose, even if we can't see it at the moment. Our perspective is limited, our understanding incomplete, but we serve a God who sees the end from the beginning. He has a plan, a good and perfect plan, designed for our ultimate good and His glory.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11, NIV)

Trusting God's plan requires a relinquishing of control, a surrendering of our plans and dreams, and a steadfast confidence in His sovereign goodness, even in the face of our struggles.

Struggles are an inevitable part of our human experience, but they're not the end of our story. As believers, we're equipped with the tools necessary to navigate these struggles. Prayer, faith, a remembrance of God's love, and trust in His plan are all invaluable components of our Christian journey.

So, as we face our struggles today, let's remember to press into God, to lean on His promises, and to seek His strength in the midst of our weakness. Our struggles may be real, but so is our God, and He is greater than any struggle we may face.

The Wellsprings of Joy in a Christian’s Life

Find joy in small things

Life, with all its ebbs and flows, has a peculiar way of reminding us of the myriad emotions that color our existence. And among those hues, one shines particularly bright: joy. As Christians, especially from a Baptist perspective, joy is not merely a fleeting emotion but a profound expression of our faith and our connection to God. Delving deeper into the scriptures, particularly the King James Version, we find that joy emanates from various sources.

Finding Joy in Nature

"The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork." (Psalm 19:1, KJV)

God’s creation, in all its splendor and grandeur, is a testament to His boundless love and creativity. Whether it's the majestic rise of the sun or the gentle rustle of autumn leaves, nature sings praises to the Creator. Every gentle breeze, every blooming flower, and every cascading waterfall is a symphony of God's masterpiece. It serves as a constant reminder of His presence and His blessings. And when we pause to really look, listen, and feel – therein lies a deep, resonating joy.

The Joy in Family and Friends

"A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity." (Proverbs 17:17, KJV)

God has blessed us with the fellowship of family and friends. Their love, support, and camaraderie make our journey through life richer and more fulfilling. In shared laughter, shared tears, and countless memories, we glimpse the divine love that binds us all together. It is through these bonds that we feel the joy of togetherness and love, mirroring the love of our Heavenly Father.

The Reward of Helping Others

"And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not." (Galatians 6:9, KJV)

Joy is not just in receiving, but profoundly in giving. Helping others, be it through acts of service, kindness, or charity, not only benefits the receiver but also fills the giver with immense joy. The Christian call to serve mirrors Jesus’ own life – a life dedicated to service, love, and compassion. In the simple acts, like offering a comforting word or lending a helping hand, joy blossoms in the most unexpected ways.

The Everlasting Joy in Jesus

"These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full." (John 15:11, KJV)

The ultimate source of joy for any Christian is in Jesus Christ. In Him, we find redemption, love, and purpose. His teachings guide our paths, His sacrifice assures our salvation, and His love envelops us. Being in communion with Jesus, walking with Him, and leaning on His promises is an inexhaustible wellspring of joy.

Joy in Surprising Ways

If we've learned anything, it's that joy isn't confined to grand moments or big gestures. Sometimes, the most profound joys are nestled in the smallest details. It could be in the fragrance of freshly baked bread, the innocent laughter of a child, or a kind word from a stranger. It's about cultivating a mindset, as Christians, to seek and acknowledge these 'little joys.' For when we truly open our eyes and hearts, we see God’s blessings scattered everywhere.

"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning." (James 1:17, KJV)

In conclusion, joy, in a Christian's life, is abundant and multifaceted. It flows from our relationship with God, spills over from the beauty of His creation, is magnified in our relationships, and amplified in acts of service. But the journey of discovering joy doesn't end here; it is ongoing, every day, in every little moment. For when we embrace the mindset of being attentive to both the vast and the minute, we realize that joy, truly, can be found in the most surprising places.
